Have you ever wondered what the purpose of life was? I have, and I've been through a time in life that I really had to question what the purpose of it all was. Are we just sitting on a spinning ball in the middle of space waiting to die... or is there a reason to this madness?
I say there is and if you'd let me I'll show you where I found my meaning.
Even though I was a Christian at the time, I really was struggling. I had just gotten out of Ranger School, and this Ranger tab that I now wore was suppose to make my life better. It was suppose to mean something. The whole time I was a private, everyone held the Ranger tab out as the ultimate goal, short of going to combat. It was the "measure of a man." However, once I got it, it didn't satisfy. Work was miserable, and I felt like I had no purpose in life. It felt like when I prayed my prayers bounced back off the ceiling. It was a time of deep depression for me.
Then I got hurt. Broke my foot on a parachute jump. God used the changes brought by that to move me to a new job at the Rangers, which I enjoyed more. I can't explain why, but over a short period of time I felt like I could talk to God again. I know during those times that God hadn't left me. I knew the Bible, it says in Matthew 28:20 the He (Jesus) would be with us forever. I think that He withdrew for a while, and showed me what life is like without Him, and I didn't like it. I was miserable. There was no purpose in life... I think death would have been more welcome then, because at least then it would be over. However, in Jesus life makes sense. There is a purpose to everything I do, whether it was being a Ranger, or now owning a business. Jesus gives me a reason for what I do.
Let me take a minute, and show you what the Bible says about how you and I can have a relationship with Jesus, and find satisfaction in life.
1)In Romans 3:23 says, "For all have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God." This means that we have all sinned. We have all done wrong. Do you see that in your life? I know I've have seen it in my life.
2) It also says in Romans 6:23 that "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." When I was in the Army, they paid me a wage for the work I did. I did the work... I got the wage. This verse tells us that the wage that we are owed for our sin is DEATH. That doesn't sound good does it? It means not only a physical death, but also a spiritual death as well. You've probably heard this referred to as hell. So here we are... the first verse tells us that we are all sinners, and the second one tells us that because we are sinners we deserve to die.
But, did you notice the "but" in the verse? What did it say? "The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Do you see what it says? That even though you and I deserve death that God has given us eternal life (heaven) in Christ Jesus.
How is this so? John 3:16 says "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." Jesus loved us so much that He died on a cross in our place that we might have eternal life. You remember the wage that we owed...? The death we owed? Jesus voluntarily paid for it. But He didn't stay in the grave. Three days later He rose again, victorious over death. He died in our place, and John 3:16 says that we need to believe in Him as our savior to have eternal life.
Is there anything that is keeping you from believing right now? What is holding you back? God has a purpose for your life. He wants to use you, and when He uses me I find satisfaction doing the same things that I use to find no satisfaction in doing. Being a Ranger had a purpose again. I love doing business now, but it is because God has given me a purpose in it. God is not a hateful God who seeks to keep us from enjoying life. Instead John 10:10 tell us, "The thief (satan) comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy; I (Jesus) came that they might have life and might have it abundantly." I can attest that this is true. Life with Jesus is much better in every aspect than life without. Will you believe? God says in Romans 10:13 "for, 'Whoever will call upon the name of the Lord will be saved.'"
If you make a choice now to believe, or have more questions than I'd love to know about it, or to talk with you some more if you have questions. You can e-mail me at [email protected].
